A Bed of His Own: Helping a Family Find Stability After Homelessness
In January 2025, a Fontana family of four found themselves without a place to call home.
After months of uncertainty, the family was finally able to move into their own apartment in January 2026, thanks to a call for assistance to Inland Housing Solutions. But finding a place to call home was only the beginning. Soon, the family found themselves lacking the necessities that many people take for granted every day.
The family had a very tumultuous two years before they found their home. In 2024, the mother began experiencing strokes that left her unable to work. With the father providing the family’s only income, the loss of his job created additional financial strain. The family eventually made the decision to move to Fontana, where the father’s mother lived, hoping to find support during a difficult period.
However, this was not a space for a family of four, and soon after they became homeless in January 2025. For the next year, the parents and their two children, a son, age 13, and a daughter, age 12, lived in their car, using the grandmother’s home to shower.
When the family finally secured an apartment in January 2026, they had a place to begin again, a fresh start. But this transition came with its own set of challenges. The father had lost his job before the move and was still searching for employment. This setback made furnishing their new home and obtaining the supplies their children needed for school and everyday life all the more difficult.
Through the family’s connection with Inland Housing Solutions, Children’s Fund was able to provide several items to help them get settled. We were able to provide two twin-sized beds, proper bedding, school supplies, hygiene items, and a week's worth of groceries.
For the 13-year-old, receiving a bed was particularly meaningful. Before the donation, he had been sleeping on a mattress on the floor. Finally having a proper bed gave him something of his own in the home that the family was working hard to make comfortable and secure.
His family noticed the difference immediately. In their own words, the bed represents more than a place to sleep. It is a reminder that their circumstances can improve and that they are moving closer to a more stable future.
“The impact is great. My son loves the bed, and it makes him feel like we are not far from being OK. He loves the bed,” the family shared. “Thank you again. And my daughter loves the bedding. Thank you for the bed and school supplies and soaps and things. I appreciate your help.”
Past the new bedding, the school supplies and hygiene kits were important additions to help children adjust to their new surroundings. Having these essential items on hand helps the family meet everyday needs while they continue working toward financial stability.
These are practical forms of assistance, but their value extends beyond the items themselves. They help families establish routines, care for their children, and focus on the next steps ahead. Although challenges remain, they now have a home where they can begin building a more stable life, while the children have the tools they need to succeed.
At Children’s Fund, helping children and families through difficult circumstances means recognizing that basic needs do not end when a family finds housing. A successful transition also requires the everyday essentials that allow children to feel comfortable, prepared, and cared for.
Through partnerships with organizations such as Inland Housing Solutions, Children’s Fund helps bridge that gap, providing tangible support when families need it most. For this family, a bed, bedding, school supplies, and hygiene kits have helped make a new apartment feel a little more like home.
And for a young boy who spent months without a bed of his own, that change means a great deal.
