Ms. Garcia’s journey began with a terrifying reality: homelessness. In June, she and her five young children fled a domestic violence situation, leaving everything behind. A call to 211 connected her to a network of support, with Children’s Fund immediately stepping in to ensure the children’s basic needs were met—from hygiene items and clothing provided in partnership with the Ontario Montclair School District.

Yet, their struggle continued. A suspected child welfare issue brought the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) into their lives. Because Ms. Garcia was actively advocating for her family and receiving comprehensive support from the School District, Loma Linda (where her seven-year-old was receiving vital care for behavioral health challenges), and Children's Fund, the family’s greatest fear was averted. Our Housing Manager provided critical documentation to the DCFS social worker, allowing the family to stay together and preventing the trauma of separation.

Children’s Fund immediately provided a safety net:

• 35 nights in a hotel to keep the family safe and off the streets.

• Gift cards for groceries, gas, clothing, and hygiene to ensure their immediate needs were met while Ms. Garcia focused on the future.

Crucially, we connected Ms. Garcia with KEYS, one of our exceptional housing partners, and worked side-by-side with them on housing navigation. This coordinated, holistic support led to a monumental achievement: On October 1st, Ms. Garcia and her five children moved into their own permanent home.

Today, the family is safe, stable, and thriving. Ms. Garcia is working with the Transitional Assistance Department for long-term stability, and her seven-year-old continues to receive the specialized care they need from Loma Linda.
